How to Make Custom WhatsApp Stickers (No App Needed)

April 19, 2026·5 min read

WhatsApp has had custom sticker support for years, but making stickers always involved either downloading a separate app or doing your own image editing. Neither option is great. There's a simpler way: generate the sticker you want in a browser, save it, and add it to WhatsApp directly. The whole process takes under five minutes.

What you need

  • A phone or computer with a browser
  • The WhatsApp app (iOS or Android)
  • A StickerForge account — free to create

WhatsApp stickers must have a transparent background and be square. StickerForge generates stickers with transparent backgrounds by default — no extra editing required.

Step 1: Generate your sticker on StickerForge

Open stickerforge.app in your browser — it works on any device. Sign in with Google or Apple, then type a prompt describing what you want.

Stickers that tend to work well for WhatsApp reactions:

  • "a thumbs-up hand with a happy face"
  • "a laughing cat rolling on the floor"
  • "a little monster shrugging"
  • "an astronaut doing a facepalm"
  • "a sleepy sloth saying goodnight"

StickerForge generates four variations per prompt. Pick the one you like — or save all four to build out a pack.

Step 2: Save the sticker to your phone

Tap and hold the sticker image and select Save to Photos (iPhone) or Download image (Android). The sticker is saved as a file with a transparent background — no cropping or editing needed.

Step 3: Add it to WhatsApp

The process is slightly different on iPhone and Android:

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. 1Open WhatsApp and go to any chat.
  2. 2Tap the emoji icon in the message bar.
  3. 3Tap the Stickers tab (the square smiley face icon).
  4. 4Tap the + icon at the top to create a new sticker pack.
  5. 5Select the image from your Photos library.
  6. 6Give the pack a name, then tap Add.

On Android

  1. 1Open WhatsApp and open any chat.
  2. 2Tap the emoji icon, then the Stickers tab.
  3. 3Tap the + button to create a new pack.
  4. 4Select images from your gallery.
  5. 5Name the pack and tap OK.

Note: On some Android versions you may need a third-party app like “Personal Stickers for WhatsApp” to create custom packs — the built-in sticker creator varies by WhatsApp version.

Building a full sticker pack

WhatsApp requires a minimum of three stickers per pack, but packs can hold up to 30. Rather than adding stickers one at a time, a good approach is to generate a themed batch on StickerForge — say, ten reaction stickers with the same character — save them all, and create one pack at once.

Use a consistent character in your prompts to build cohesive sets: “a chunky clay dragon that is [happy / sad / confused / excited / sleepy]” keeps the style and character consistent across the whole pack.

Why this works better than sticker maker apps

  • No download required: StickerForge runs in a browser tab. No App Store install, no storage used.
  • Works on any device: iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, tablet — if it has a browser, it works.
  • Better sticker quality: AI-generated clay stickers look more consistent and polished than the clip-art style most sticker apps offer.
